Sophie Manham

Sophie is a founding director of SHM. A former documentary film-maker for the BBC, her expertise lies in observing, recording and representing people and their aspirations.

Whilst at SHM she has been responsible for:
  • spearheading the firm’s use of creative tools and an understanding of visual language to generate innovative solutions to problems on behalf of major organizations in the public, corporate and charity sectors;

  • developing the firm’s approach to internal Human Resources, in which she has developed a mechanism for ensuring high levels of performance and sophisticated forms of professional development within a small team.
She is also one of the company experts on participatory design approaches with users, running workshops with members of the community to empower them to design products and services to help their lives. She has worked in this way with elderly people, carers, young African-Caribbean and long-term unemployed men in Nottingham; and with sex workers in Kolkata, India.

Sophie is also a Trustee of the Kids’ Cookery School, Acton, a charity dedicated to fostering independence and self-esteem by teaching cookery skills, healthy eating and food awareness to children from all backgrounds and age groups within the community, and in particular those at risk of exclusion.

Whilst engaged in these activities, Sophie has continued an early interest in painting, photography and illustration, and within the last couple of years, has been working part-time at SHM in order to train as a figurative painter.
