Nigel Shardlow

Nigel Shardlow is an experienced consultant and senior manager with a broad skill base encompassing qualitative research, marketing communications, new product development, strategy and planning, and change management. Nigel heads up the Insight team at SHM, where he brings his wide-ranging experience to bear on projects in the public, private and third sector.

Nigel recently led a ground-breaking research project jointly with UCL, using techniques drawn from the humanities to understand the experience of people with brain cancer. He has worked with the Department of Health to develop a behaviour change strategy for the prevention and early identification of COPD. In the private sector, he has leveraged insights into motivation and behaviour to inform work for Unilever , Accenture, Givaudan and Google.

Nigel started his career teaching philosophy at Oxford University and at Birkbeck College in the University of London, but left academia to take part in the first internet revolution, taking his first commercial post with Wolff Olins. Following this, he lead the digital media team at Orange (where he received three industry awards for his work on internet communications and online advertising and wrote the first article on the internet for the Times Literary Supplement) and went on to head up the company's Innovation and New Product Development team, spanning many different content and service sectors including music, games and m-commerce. He led the digital platforms team at Yell and also founded a group SMS company, Zygo Communications, launching this service commercially in March 2008.

Nigel holds a first class bachelor's degree in philosophy and a master's degree in cognitive science from the University of Manchester and a doctorate in philosophy from Jesus College, Oxford. He is also a director of software development company Vanilla Internet.
