Nick Shanks has amassed considerable experience at SHM since joining the company at the end of 2003. He has carried out a number of roles – including researcher, project manager, interviewer, facilitator, analyst and report writer – across a wide range of programmes for clients operating in both the private and public sectors.
Nick has worked with diverse range of clients in a varied range of organisations – this has included the Learning and Skills Council (LSC) where he supported a programme of work helping up to 50 Further Education (FE) Colleges and Providers in London and the Southwest of England become more effective suppliers of skills training to businesses. He has also carried out work for the LSC in Bristol, which focused on improving the experience young Muslim learners had of learning in FE: this involved listening to and understanding the challenges and issues important to learners and then giving both learners and providers the chance to share issues and discuss potential solutions.
More recently Nick has worked with the Driving Standards Agency (DSA) on a Young People’s Forum, which put the voice of young people at the centre of the Government’s consultation on ‘Changing The Way We Learn To Drive’. His work included developing ideas with young people that would help shape the consultation and then supporting forum members collect other young people’s opinions from around Britain. Nick has also facilitated qualitative research workshops for the Department of Transport to understand the motivations and behaviours of motorcyclists with an aim to improving motorcycle safety. Nick’s work with private sector companies, such as Diageo, has centred on engaging with and understanding people and how relationships can be made more effective.
Nick is currently working with Portsmouth Hospitals NHS Trust on a programme designed to develop the Trust’s corporate identity.
